2. The key points first
SayLocal’s speech recognition runs entirely on your device. Voice recordings, dictated texts, content from your screen, learned terms and places are not transmitted to us or to third parties – the only exceptions are the optional cloud recognition on Intel Macs (Section 7) and the optional, end-to-end encrypted synchronization of learned words between your devices (Section 8), the content of which we cannot read. The app uses content from your screen only in working memory for the current recording. The only data stored on your device are individual terms you have corrected and the approximate location of places you dictate. You can delete both in the settings.
3. Visiting this website
This website is delivered via Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA). In the process, Cloudflare processes technically necessary data such as the IP address, the time and the page accessed in order to deliver the page and protect it against attacks (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). So that the page appears in your language, we use your browser’s language settings and – only if none of them matches – the country determined by Cloudflare; neither is stored. We do not set cookies for advertising or analytics purposes, do not embed fonts or scripts from third-party providers and do not keep visitor statistics.
On the forms (request a trial, manage license) we use Cloudflare Turnstile to protect against automated requests. For this purpose, Turnstile evaluates technical characteristics of the browser (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
4. Requesting a trial
For the free trial, you provide your email address. We store it together with your language, the time and the trial key generated, and send you the download link and the key (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). During the trial period, we send at most four short emails with tips on using the app and on the end of the trial period. You can unsubscribe from these emails at any time with one click. We delete data from trials not followed by a purchase no later than 12 months after the end of the trial period.
5. Purchase
Sale, payment, tax and invoicing are handled by Stripe as the merchant (Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd., 1 Grand Canal Street Lower, Dublin 2, Ireland, and affiliated companies). Stripe itself is responsible for the payment data; Stripe’s privacy policy applies. We receive from Stripe your email address, the plan selected, the time of purchase and the status of the subscription and payment in order to create, renew or terminate your license (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). We do not receive card details. We retain purchase and license data for as long as the license exists and thereafter within the scope of statutory retention obligations.
6. Activation and license check
Upon activation and thereafter once or twice a day, the app checks with our server whether the license is valid. Only the following is transmitted:
- the license key,
- a checksum of the device identifier (irreversible; the actual identifier does not leave the device),
- upon activation, additionally the device name and the operating system, so that you can recognize your devices at getsaylocal.com/konto.
We store the time of the last check for each device. To protect against misuse, we briefly count requests on the basis of a truncated, irreversible checksum of the IP address. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (provision of the license for up to two of your own devices). The data is stored in a Cloudflare database located in Western Europe.
7. Cloud recognition on Intel Macs (optional)
On Macs without an Apple chip, you can switch on cloud recognition in the app. It is off by default and only becomes active once you explicitly tick the box. Each recording is then sent in encrypted form to getsaylocal.com and converted into text by Cloudflare (Workers AI) as our processor. The language set and your own list of terms are sent along with it, never content from your screen. We store neither recordings nor texts. Processing may also take place outside the EU (Cloudflare is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework). The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time in the settings. This feature is not available on Macs with an Apple chip.
8. Synchronization of learned words between your devices (optional)
So that your second device knows the same terms, you can switch on synchronization in the app. It is off by default and only becomes active after your explicit confirmation. The app then encrypts the list of your learned terms (term, spellings heard, frequency, time of last use, deleted terms) on your device using AES-256 and stores only this encrypted data block on our server (Cloudflare R2, located in Western Europe). The key is contained solely in your device code, which only your devices know; we never receive it and cannot read the content. We only see which license the block belongs to, how large it is and when it was changed. Recordings, texts and screen content are never transmitted. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can stop the synchronization at any time in the settings and delete the copy in doing so; we delete it automatically no later than 90 days after the license ends.
9. Automatic updates
With the license check, the app receives the number of the latest version. If it is newer, the app downloads the update from getsaylocal.com; in the process, the license key and the device checksum are transmitted. You can switch off automatic installation in the settings.
10. Anonymous usage figures (optional)
Only if you switch on “Help improve anonymously” in the app does SayLocal send a summary once a day: app and system version, chip, working memory, language set, number and duration of dictations, recognition time, how often the automatic correction intervened, the number of words dictated and the time saved calculated from it. Recordings, texts, words, names or screen content are never sent. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw it at any time in the settings; the values collected on the device are then deleted.
Your statistics in the app (time saved, words, dictations) are, independently of this, counted only on your device and are not sent.
Invitation links: Licensed users can obtain a personal short link (getsaylocal.com/r/…) in the app for recommending SayLocal. For this purpose, we store a random code associated with their license. When the link is opened, we only count the number of visits per day – without IP address, without cookie – and redirect to the trial version. If the invited person requests a trial there, we record the code with their trial key in order to see how many trials and purchases result from recommendations (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, legitimate interest in measuring our referrals). The inviting person only sees numbers, never who has tried the app.
11. Feedback
If you send us a message via the app or getsaylocal.com/feedback, we store the text, the type (bug, request, other), the language and – only if you provide it – your email address for follow-up questions. If you tick the box, technical details from the app are added (app and macOS version, chip, working memory, language, license status); to prevent misuse, the server checks your license key in the process. We use the information to fix bugs and improve SayLocal (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). We delete the email address after 12 months at the latest.
Requests from companies: Via getsaylocal.com/firmen you can request a quote for multiple seats. We store the company, name, email address, approximate number of seats and your message in order to answer the request (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, pre-contractual measures), and forward it by email to Conto IT. The data is deleted after 12 months if no contract results from the request.
12. Emails
We send our emails via Cloudflare Email Service. License and purchase emails are necessary for the performance of the contract. You can unsubscribe from the tips sent during the trial period.
13. Your rights
You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, as well as the right to withdraw consent. To exercise these rights, write to [email protected]. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, for example the Unabhängiges Landeszentrum für Datenschutz Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel.
